Only a girl

Only a girl

I grew up with brothers, three of them. And boys were treated differently from girls. They got to go to the most prestigious boys’ private school in the city, whereas I was left in the local government primary school. But in my school, it was routine to learn to play the recorder – the whole class together, it’s the only instrument you can learn in big numbers. We started at six, continued till we left primary at eleven.

In my brothers’ expensive private school, music was left to the parents to take care of. I’m not even sure my brothers had singing lessons.

After the recorder, I went on to piano lessons. For years I have played the piano in churches.

Music came to me, because I was only a girl. I’ve taught hundreds of others – and boys too – to make music…..
